Winners of the Best Unsigned Band Competition 2015 by The Sunday Herald In Association with XFM & The Wickerman Festival.
Irie Yo-Yo are a Ska/Reggae band based in Edinburgh. Debuted on the Edinburgh music scene on the 3rd of May 2015 at the Edinburgh food festival and since then they have been gigging non stop at venues such as Mash House, Cabaret Voltaire, Stramash!, The Cowshed, Studio 24, Malone's and various others. During August 2015 and 2016 Irie secured multiple residencies and played over twenty gigs during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Irie consists of seven members: first up on lead vocals/rhythm guitar, James Flynn, who brings the soulful sound of reggae with his captivating vocals and foot stomping guitar hooks; second up on bass, Oliver Sentance giving you those slick, groovey bass lines; then there's the brass section who bring Irie alive! On trumpet is Phil Ramsay, the ska man himself who is no stranger to getting the party bouncing; playing saxophone/vocals is the wonderful Hebe James, bringing you some sweet, mesmerising reggae vibes and harmonies to warm any heart. Then we have the wonderful Paulo Riddle with his famous congas on percussion, giving you that beat fuelled reggae/ska beat. now we can't forget our lovely Ben Trolley on keys giving you that rhythmic sound from his wonderful keyboard and last but not least, in the rear with the gear, is the very talented drummer/vocalist 'Beat Master' Peter Farrugia, bringing the backbone and yet even more feel good vocal harmonies to Irie, a true drumming force of nature. With inspiration from artists such as Desmond Dekker, Max Romeo, The Specials, Manu Chao and Gentleman, Irie Yo-Yo has developed a very full and soulful ska sound. From the 4 part vocal harmonies, to the succulent sound of the brass section this band is right where it needs to be.
So keep an eye out for Irie Yo-Yo in the future and get yourself along for a night you're not going to forget in a hurry! Shabba.
