Itziarren Semeak, formed in 2007 around Bilbao in the Basque Country, is a nine piece band fusing ska, punk and reggae. They took strong influence from Basque bands from the whole RRV Movement (Rock Radical Vasco) that was born in The Basque Country in the 80’s. They combine a unique mix of punk beats and ska rythms, with a strong political message of solidarity and resistance. The band’s name ‘Itziarren Semeak’ comes from a song by the celebrated 1960s Basque traditional music band Pantxoa eta Peio and translates from Basque as ‘Itziar’s Sons’: Itziar being a popular woman’s name in the Basque Country. The song tells the story of Itziar’s son who was arrested and brutally tortured by the police. Yet, despite his horrific ordeal, he refused to reveal the names of any of his comrades. Itziarren Semeak has released a total of four LPs (Bizkaiko Golfoak, 2010; Lehen Lerroan, Dale Candela, 2012; nd Revolta 2014) as well as one demo (Itziarren Semeak, 2008) and an EP (Basque of Brixton, 2012). Since the band’s formation, they have played more than 300 concerts in the Basque Country combined with very successful tours in Cuba in 2012 and Argentina and Chile in 2014. Also they have played in Ireland, London (Brixton), Madrid (Vallekas), Barcelona (Catalunya) and Al Andalus (Marinaleda and Chiclana).
